Spray Paint Mirrors: Create Designer Wall Decor On A Budget

It’s easy to spray paint thrift store mirrors and create designer-worthy wall decor on a budget. I bought three mirrors at the thrift store for $2 each. Not a steal but an okay deal. White Spray paint improved the look of the mirrors, but what I did next was genius.

How To Upcycle Thrift Store Mirrors Using Spray Paint

Today is Thrift Store Decor Tour Day and my thrifty friends have some over-the-top thrifty makeovers today. You can find the links to those projects at the bottom of this post. Let me tell you about the mirrors first and how I came up with the wood frame idea.

Mirrors for the Wall Decor Project

The funky starburst-looking round frames on the mirrors are all the same size but the mirrors themselves aren’t. One of the mirrors is larger than the other two. I didn’t notice that when I bought the mirrors, but in this instance, the size difference worked out perfectly.

I wasn’t sure where I was going with the makeover but I did know I wanted the mirror frames to be white. The gold color wasn’t shiny and bright and gave the mirrors a dated look. I removed the frame backs and the mirrors to make spray painting the frames easier. No taping over mirrors or anything else.

Spray Paint The Mirrors

I used my favorite Rustoleum Heirloom Satin spray paint. Spray paint projects are fast and easy and I keep a large selection of spray paint in my workshop. The Thrift Store Decor Team also has many fantastic projects using spray paint.

Once the spray painted frames were good and dry, I reattached the mirrors and the backs to the frames. I brought the mirrors into the house and laid them on the dresser in the back bedroom and that’s where they sat for a month.

I couldn’t decide where to hang the mirrors or how to hang them. My first thought was to attach ribbon to the backs of the mirrors and use the ribbon as a hanger, sort of like the framed postcard in the photo above.

You can use ribbon, sisal rope, or something similar if your framed piece isn’t large enough for the space and you need to add height. Ribbon also gives a mirror, framed photo, or wall art a different feel.

When we painted and redecorated the orange and turquoise bedroom, I hung the wood frame and centered a cowboy hat in the middle of the frame. I kept looking at the mirrors and thinking about ways to use ribbon or sisal rope to hang them. Didn’t feel right. I woke up one morning thinking about the long wood frame in the photo above.

Attach Mirrors to the Wood Frame

Because the cowboy hat was so lightweight I attached it to the wood frame with sticky back Velcro so removing the hat was easy. I measured the frame, centered the middle mirror, and attached it using my nail gun.

I eyeballed the placement of the two side mirrors and nailed them in place. The frame already had wall protectors on all four corners on the backside from its first life as an above-the-headboard wall décor/hat holder.

Hang The New Mirror Decor

The new look is very upscale or chic, maybe even designer. I love it. Multiples of things are more eye-catching, don’t you think?

The hat was cute on the wood frame but the three mirrors have more impact. I can see this piece hanging over a sofa,  over a desk, in a foyer, etc.

This bedroom is my fav because of the bold colors. Orange and turquoise work perfectly together and you never can have too many pillows.

  1. Love, love the mirrors on the wood frame! Kinda boring before with the hat, but fantastic with the 3 mirrors. Great job – love your creativity.

  2. Love the way you finished the mirrors. Looks good above the bed, like you put them.
