How to repurpose a wood shelf into a game, cookbook, or DVD organizer.

I’m not sure what the person behind these designs was going for but it didn’t work for me. The thrift store price did….$2.48 at half price….$1.24.

I decided on a pretty red spray paint and started to work. The brand I used didn’t cover well at all. I got out my Rust-Oleum Gray Primer and sprayed over the red.

Once again I tried using the red spray paint over the primer and it looked like this. The brand shall remain nameless. By far, my favorite spray paint brand is Rust-Oleum. I gave up on the red spray paint and grabbed the special mix latex paint from my red cedar chest. It’s the perfect red.

I distressed the shelf once the paint was dry and used Howard’s Wax in walnut to age the paint finish.

The shelf now has a second life as a DVD organizer. My first thought was to use it for my cookbooks, and I did try it, but the cookbooks are too wide. The shelf worked but didn’t look nearly as cool as it does here. Can you see the titles on the DVDs? Some of them are the granddaughters’ favorite movies, some are Xbox Kinect sports and dance fun, and some are yoga DVDs. Those yoga ones don’t get much use, but I sure love the dance ones.
