Upcycled Brass Christmas Bell Decoration

Always save pieces and parts of old DIY projects and upcycle them. The upcycled brass Christmas bell is the ceiling canopy from a vintage hanging light fixture. Wondering what the canopy is?
I removed the bell shaped piece from the vintage chandelier when I made an autumn pumpkin display earlier this year. I had no idea what this piece was called, I just knew I would probably use it in a future upcycle.
After a Google search I know what the proper term for the piece is and now you know too…..a “canopy”. I’m sure this question has been bothering you for years. Today is Thrift Store Decor Day and we have some wonderful DIY Christmas decorations for you.
So, looking at the canopy you see a bell, right? It was the perfect piece for a Christmas project.
Earlier in the month I removed this greenery sprig from the silver-plate door wreath I made last winter. I decided to make another project with the silver plate tray but that hasn’t happened yet. The greenery would be the perfect complement to the bell.
The bell needed a clapper and I searched through all of my hardware and finally came up with this drop type drawer pull.
To tie the bell into the greenery I brushed a bit of turquoise color paint onto the bell.
Then I wiped it off with a damp paper towel. No photo of the action because it is hard to hold my camera or phone and do this process. I wiped the paint off until I achieved the perfect look (in my mind anyway).
Next I need to add a little more color so I pulled out a few spools of ribbon.
I cut two short stripes from the blue ribbon with the winter design and tied them to the middle portion of the greenery.
Then I tied the bell to the middle of the greenery using jute. I thought more ribbon would be overkill and distraction.
Next, I hot glued the drop drawer pull or “clapper” to a piece of jute and attached it to the bell through the hole at the top. I knotted the jute so it couldn’t slip back through the hole. No photo of this process either.
Now wasn’t that easy and so much fun. I love my little brass Christmas bell decoration.
To display the bell decoration I hung it on my new favorite furniture piece from the online auction.
I am in the process of repairing and cleaning the piece so I can move it into the house. The clapper for the bell wants to turn around to the backside but that’s okay too. It looks fine either way.
I think the part of the project that really makes it work is the paint on the bell. It just ties everything together.
One last look and it’s time to take the Thrift Store Decor tour. Leave a note if you have time before heading off to see the other projects. Take the tour by clicking the links below the “before” makeovers photo collage…

Kathy, This is such a creative upcycle. The brass alone is lovely, but the paint really gives it an old copper look. It’s perfectly styled with the greenery.
I agree, the paint kicks the bell up a notch! Great project!
Thanks
Thank you
Thank you for the comment and the idea. Now I need to add something sparkly to the clapper!!!
I love google image search!!! I had no idea that it was called a canopy. Plus, when I saw your before picture I just assumed it WAS a bell!
Very clever and creative makeover Kathy.

I love how this turned out, so clever. I wonder how a small “jewel” would look set into the indentation of the clapper, or a little blue paint down there. Now I’m going to have to check out my collection of lamp parts to see if I can make one too. Thanks for the inspiration 🙂
This is brilliant! I’ll look at old light fixtures in a new light from now on!
