How To Spray Paint A Bamboo Tray Or Basket: Thrift Store Decor

It is easy to spray paint small home decor pieces and this bamboo tray is a great example.
I found the tray or basket at the thrift store. It was $3.99 but the price tag color was blue and the basket was 50% off. Deal. I did a Google Lens search and it seems to be made of bamboo. The set-in handles on the ends are metal.
Would you call it a tray or basket? I called it a basket, but it might be more of a tray. I first thought of hanging it on the wall in the bathroom and putting folded hand towels in it. It would hang nicely either horizontally or vertically. And I might do that later.
This is Thrift Store Decor Day, and the team has some fabulous projects to start the new year. Today, I’m repurposing the basket tray into a guest bedroom magazine holder or organizer.
Several months ago, I spray painted vases for the guest bedroom with metallic gold spray paint.
Since I planned to set the basket on the dresser with the vases, I painted it to match. Instead of painting the basket entirely in gold, I gave it a two-tone finish with Rustoleum Metallic Gold Spray Paint and Rustoleum Satin Heirloom White (off-white) Spray Paint.
It took about 30 minutes to complete this project. I set the basket outside on a large sheet of wood to spray the paint. I never use spray paint indoors, even in my workshop. I didn’t wipe off or clean the basket before painting it.
It was so cold outside, and I forgot to grab my camera, so no pictures. I first sprayed the whole basket Satin Heirloom White and the spray paint dried in about 15 minutes.
If you’ve been here before you know I live by the “perfectly imperfect” motto and am not real precise with a lot of my paint techniques. This basket project got the same treatment.
I commented earlier about wanting a two-tone white and gold finish for the basket. At this point, the basket was all white, and my idea was to paint the very top strip all around the basket, and the metal handles gold.
To do this, I pulled a strip of aluminum foil from the roll and tucked the straight edge of the foil below the metal handle and the top strip of the basket on all four sides, letting the foil drape over the bottom portion of the basket. Next, I sprayed the metallic gold spray paint on the part of the basket not covered by the aluminum foil.
And that was it. I know I drive some of you crazy with my weird way of doing things. If you have an idea for a project and aren’t sure how to do it just start and you can figure a way!
I set the finished basket on the dresser in the guest bedroom and placed various books and magazines in it. The tray could also hold a candle, a flower vase, lotions, and perfumes—or other things.
