Dollar Tree decals are a great way to add a touch of fun or drama to home decor, and this project is all about drama. Today is Thrift Store Decor Tour Day, and we have some humdingers for you.
My project started with this paint can I received from Black Dog Salvage. It was full of Black Dog Salvage paint samples. That’s what I call “happy mail.”
Once I used all the paint samples, I kept the paint can. It was great for storing small items but now it’s time to repurpose the can in a fun way.
The first thing I did was remove the labels. They came off easily, which is not always the case with sticky labels.
Next I decided to give the can a coat of spray paint before brush painting it. The surface was a little slick and I thought a base coat of spray paint was a good idea.
Once the spray paint was dry, I brush painted the can with my sample can of Behr oops paint. I love oops paint because the price fits my budget! This sample size was 52 cents. I used this paint color last month on my decorative table makeover.
I removed the metal handle before painting the can. Copper is a better contrast to the blue than the metallic silver handle, so I spray painted the handle with metallic copper spray paint.
Now for the cool part of the project. I bought these decals at Dollar Tree probably a year ago. I know they’ve been on my shelf for a while. The colors are so pretty. They remind me of autumn.
The decals are simple to peel and stick. When I bought them, I had no plans for them. They were a tad short, so I purchased two, and I’m glad I did.
I used one of the decals and part of the other one. I cut the second decal and fit it so that it blended in with the other and the transition looks seamless.
I have to say the colors in the decal contrast very nicely with the blue oops paint. The bold yellow blooms catch my eye.
Now, that’s a cool paint can. Are you ready to repurpose a paint can? You can paint it any color and decorate it to fit your style. New paint cans are available on Amazon, and I’m sure you can find them at your local hardware store.
When I first had the project in mind, I thought the can would make a lovely gift container for a gardener. Fill it with seed packets, garden gloves, etc., and present it to your favorite gardener/friend.
The can can be used to store all kinds of things or just sit around empty and look pretty. I don’t think it would look cool as a plant container, but you never know.
The lid for the can also has a little decal piece with a sunflower and a few leaves. If you have a thought on my project or just want to say “Hi,” leave a quick note before you head out on the Thrift Store Decor Tour.

Wow! This is a fabulous repurpose. That blue color is so pretty. This would make a wonderful doorstop. Fill it with something heavy like sand. Love it!!!
Very, very nice. The paint colors and decals look like they were custom made to go together.
That turned out so pretty!!
This is such a cute reporpose of a paint can! Love the color and decals.
Great idea. Thanks for sharing!
Love the paint can makeover! I would use it in my kitchen with a clear plastic bag inside for my peels and coffee grounds, etc. for compost. Much prettier than the tupperware I hide now.
Kathy,
Since blue is my favorite color, you must know how much I love the new look of the old paint can. I think I saw those decals last week at my local $$Tree.
Super cute, pinned!
