A can of spray paint and thrift store vases are all you need to create designer-worthy two-tone metallic gold and clear glass vases.
I bought the three vases at my local thrift store and gave them a pretty finish in just minutes. I’m sharing all the details of the makeover plus….it’s Thrift Store Decor Day. Yay! Eight thrifty inspirational projects.
The inspiration piece for this project is a vase I spotted at Hobby Lobby. It was a clear glass vase with the upper third metallic gold and the lower part just the clear glass. I loved the vase and knew I could DIY it at home.
The hardest part of the project was applying the painter’s tape to the areas I did not want to spray paint. The problem was the short, curvy piece. I planned to spray paint only the top third of the glass, but I couldn’t get the tape to lay flat on the curved area without much crimping.
That meant there would be no straight paint line- more of a jagged one. So, I finally moved the tape down to the flat area of the glass. Then, I also taped the inside lips of the vases to prevent paint from getting inside.
The spray paint which totally makes this look is Rust-Oleum Metallic Gold (on Amazon). I love this paint; it is so shiny and vibrant.
I pulled the painter’s tape off the glass immediately after the paint dried. Leaving the tape on too long may cause the paint to dry to the tape and pull away from the glass when the tape is removed.
Just look at those crisp, straight lines on the glass vases. I have to admit that pulling off the tape is my favorite part of the project. Weird, right?
The vases turned out even better than I expected. The shine is fabulous. They are sitting on the small chest in our blue and white guest bedroom.
The vases look great displayed with flowers or without.
The metallic gold paint is as shiny as my brass lamp. This lamp is real brass….the heavy kind.
The three different sizes of vases and the various shapes work well together. And I did a great job of placing the tape. I don’t have a problem patting myself on the back. I have enough projects that go wrong or cause headaches so when I have a win the first time around…..I’m proud.
I added the pink daffodils since it is almost Springtime. Pink and gold are pretty together.
I love working with glass bottles and vases. Spray paint creations are fast and easy. Take a look at this project…

That’s it! I am doing this. Looks like something you’d see at Anthropologie. It looks so high-end at a fraction of the cost.
These turned out so pretty! I might make some for my desk to catch all the clutter! Super cute!
Very pretty glassware project Kathy. I love the shiny gold spray paint! The vases look so trendy.

Hi Kathy! I love these and there are plenty of glass vases at the thrift store. I am going to try this. Thank you for sharing!
These turned out SO GORGEOUS, Kathy!! And I totally get the satisfaction of peeling off the tape- it’s so gratifying (if the line is clean, LOL).
