The Most Amazing Chest Of Drawers Purchased At An Auction

I bought the most amazing chest of drawers from an online auction last night. I will pick the chest up later today but I couldn’t wait to share it with yall.

antique chest of drawers is an auction buy

Isn’t it a beauty? Look at those details. I’m swooning. It appears to be in amazingly good shape structurally.

white chest of drawers

I paid $75 for it—a great deal. The paint is chipping in places, and the piece needs a good cleaning. I will repaint it, but unless there is a lot of lost paint, I don’t plan to sand the paint before I repaint it. I’m pretty sure from looking at the finish that the paint is lead-based. It’s better to just paint over it.

Painting over the paint isn’t a problem. I do it all the time. A couple of coats of new paint will seal the lead-based paint, so it shouldn’t get airborne or cause any health issues.

old crate

I bought the old crate at the auction too for $8. The crate is pretty large.

wood tool box from auction

The next few photos are things I bought at the auction a couple of weeks ago. Just now getting around to sharing. I like the homemade wood tote and it was $5.

assorted lot from auction

Then I got this box lot of small stuff for $4.

old bible

This small bible is really old but I forgot the date and it is down in the workshop right now. I will add the date here later with more info.

assortment of pins

An assortment of pins and the pretty white milk glass shaker….only one.

brass pieces

Then there were a few brass pieces in the box.

mini glass dishes

And these small glass dishes and that is it. What do you think of my purchases? What color should I paint the chest of drawers?

  1. That’s a great chest! I would paint it a neutral color. I like the crate & tote, too. For those, I would just clean & seal them.

  2. I’m sorry that happened to you Mandy. Sometimes you have to prime first or use a brand of paint with a built in primer. I haven’t started painting the dresser yet. We will see how it goes.

  3. I painted over lead paint with latex. What a mess. You touch the door & the new paint peels off. How do you get latex paint to stick to lead based paint? I am afraid I will have to take the door down & strip or sand down to bare wood & start over?

  4. i vote for keeping a light, neutral color on this beauty!!

  5. Wow that a keep love that chest of drawers wow I would not have passed that up….
    You are blessed….

Beautiful! Great buys. I can’t wait to see what you do with it all.

Good thought about not sanding the lead paint – hadn’t thought of that but it’s clearly the safer thing to do. Can’t wait to see what happens with the chest of drawers.
Love the crate too what a beautiful colour.
