This is such a sweet project. I love making miniature snow scene displays during the Christmas holidays. I love the fact that they are so easy to change up.

I started this snow scene display with a vintage silver plate tray I found at Goodwill. It is a medium size tray with a lot of decorative detail. The glass bowl is one of several I picked up during various thrift store shopping trips. This one just happened to sit perfectly inside the tray.

I spray painted a wood knob with metallic silver spray paint but I have no idea what happened to the photo.

Then I hot glued the silver knob to the bottom of the glass bowl to transform it into a globe cover for the tray.

Next, I went on a search for small items to put inside the globe. Before I started the project, I pulled out several silver plate pieces and globes, trying to decide which items to work with. At the same time, I gathered a few Christmas items.

I began the scene with the white bottle brush tree. You don’t realize until you start working with a small bowl globe just how tiny the pieces have to be to fit inside. Several items I selected to use in the display were too tall.

The tree was a little plain and I had a whole card full of these miniature Christmas wreaths I bought at Hobby Lobby last season. I just looped the wreath hanger over the tree top.

Before putting the tree on the tray, I filled the bottom part of the silver plate tray with Epsom Salt.

Then I set the tree and two mini snowmen in the “snow.” I tried smoothing the Epsom Salt lightly with my fingertips but I just made big dents in the snow. A small paint brush worked well for this job.

I set the globe over the tree and snowmen and realized the snow came up over the outside of the globe….. a lot. So I used the paint brush to push the snow away from the sides of the bowl.

Now it’s perfect. I’ve used these tiny snowmen in displays for the past several years. That’s the cool thing about a lot of my Christmas DIYs. There is nothing permanent about the displays. I don’t damage or ruin the pieces. Even the hot glued knob on top will pop off if I pull on it hard enough.

The silver plate dish was lightly tarnished and I didn’t try to shine the silver. The tarnish is just right and adds character to the piece.

One thing to consider when putting one of these displays together is the opening size of the bowl. If the opening is small, getting the bowl set over all of the pieces in the scene will be difficult.

I made probably 20 snow scenes last year using salt and pepper shakers, Apothecary jars, mason jars, and other glass items.
