Fall Decorating: Colorful Budget Friendly DIY Ideas
When it starts to feel like Fall with the cool breezes and rustling leaves, I head straight for my workshop and dig through my stash of junk treasures. You know the stash I’m talking about…..old sweaters, rusty tools, chipped wood pieces, candle holders, cutter quilts, and all my treasured junk finds.
I love decorating for Fall because it’s my favorite time of year, and I love the warm colors, although I don’t think everything has to be orange and brown to say Fall. A little paint, a few Dollar Tree flowers, and something unique can come together as fun seasonal décor.
These projects are for anyone who likes Fall decorating with that perfectly imperfect look I love so much. There are wreaths made from purses and rakes, pumpkins decorated with paint and fabric, and upcycled thrift-store treasures. The majority of my projects are easy peasy and don’t require a big budget. Take the ideas, use what you have or what you can find at the thrift store, and do your own thing!
1. DIY Fall Rake Wreath Idea And Wood Birdhouse Flower Container
A rusty rake, grapevine wreath, and floral piece make the easiest Fall door display. All three pieces were thrift store finds, and they look right at home with a funky birdhouse flower container and a few junky pots on the porch. I love a project that comes together without any glitches.
2. DIY Fall Sunflower Purse Wreath
Sometimes I get tired of starting every door decoration with a round wreath. An old purse has its own built-in hanger, and all you have to do is stuff it with pretty Fall flowers and fabric. Easy peasy, and you can change it up for every season.
3. Fall Craft: Upcycled Quilt Wreath With Dollar Tree Flowers
This wreath gives a worn vintage quilt a new life with inexpensive Dollar Tree flowers and greenery. I love the mix of old quilt fabric and those pretty Fall-colored stems. Use a quilt, flowers, or greenery from your own stash and make it your own.
4. DIY Recycled Sweater Pumpkins With Wine Cork Stems
Thrift store sweaters make the prettiest soft pumpkins, especially in rich Fall colors. I made three for less than $8, which beats paying $42 for one little plush pumpkin. The wine cork stems are the perfect finishing touch.

These pumpkins started with scrap wood, an estate-sale cutter quilt, and pom-pom fringe. The colors are soft and unexpected, which is exactly why I love them. You can use this same technique on all kinds of seasonal décor, not just pumpkins.
6. How To Decorate Mini White Pumpkins Without Carving
Grab a few mini white pumpkins and see what you have hanging around the workshop or junk drawer. I was just wingin’ it with assorted supplies, and no carving or mess was involved. These little pumpkins are perfect for adding personality to a Fall table display.
7. Dry Brush Wood Stools White To Display White Pumpkins And White Mums For Fall Decor
Old stools, benches, and tool totes look so good with a little dry brushing. The paint freshens them up while letting all those dings, scratches, and rough spots show through. Add white pumpkins and mums for a clean Fall display with plenty of character.
8. DIY Metallic Fall Pumpkin Filled Display
This thrift store centerpiece was a mess when I found it, and it even fell apart when I picked it up. A little metallic gold spray paint gave it a whole new look. Fill the tiers with mini pumpkins and seasonal goodies, then change it out whenever you want.

I can’t pass up an old chandelier because there are so many ways to repurpose one. This one became a colorful hanging Fall display with Dollar Tree flowers, mini pumpkins, candles, and glittery bats. And I didn’t even have to paint the chandelier!
10. Thrifty Candle Holder Makeover With A 50 Cent Wreath
A $5 thrift store candle holder and a 50-cent wreath turned into one easy seasonal project. Inspiration struck while I was driving home, and I knew the two pieces belonged together. Tuck in a few Fall bits now, then switch them out when the season changes.
