I have a hoard of seashells and try to do something different with them every summer. They’re one of my favorite things to use for seasonal decorating because they already have such beautiful natural texture and shape. A little paint gives them a whole new look without losing that coastal charm.
Spray Paint Seashells With Metallic Paint
Gather a few of your favorite seashells in various shapes and lay them out flat on a large poster board or piece of wood.

The Color Choice Makes a Big Impact
There are a lot of metallic spray paint colors to choose from, but gold and silver are my favorites. Those two finishes make the shells look bright, elegant, and expensive. The shine also catches the light beautifully, which makes them perfect for display.
This metallic gold color from Rustoleum is my go-to for a bold look. The can may say Bright Coat or just Metallic instead of 2X, but the colors look the same to me. I’ve used them all.
To paint the seashells, I laid them on their back on poster board outside my workshop (don’t use spray paint indoors) and applied a coat of gold paint. It took less than a minute to spray paint the shells. The paint dried in about 10 minutes, and I flipped the shells and painted the other side. That was it!
I’ve used spray paints in the past that stayed sticky for a long time and took forever to dry, but not these metallics.
The shells looked so good I gathered a few artificial succulents to paint too. I like the white succulents I painted a couple of years ago.
When I first started this project, I was only going to make gold seashells, but a couple of days later I pulled out the metallic silver.
How the Seashells Look After Painting
Once the paint dries, the shells have a gorgeous metallic glow that really stands out. The different shell shapes are interesting, and they really make a statement in silver and gold.
I love how the paint highlights the curves, ridges, and details in each one.
Easy Ways to Use Painted Seashells in Decor
These painted shells make wonderful decor, unique and dramatic. You can display them in a bowl on the coffee table, scatter them across your mantel, or use them in a bathroom vignette for a summer touch.
Maybe add them to a vintage milkglass dish with a strand of white beads as filler. Starfish, sand dollars, and other coastal pieces look great in gold and silver too.
Fill a vase with sand, sisal rope, or white beads and sit the shells on top. These white beads are just a few of the strands I use to decorate our Christmas tree every year.
I pulled out a dark sisal rope to add to the display.
When the kids were little, we always hunted for seashells on the beach. All of my stash is from our beach trips except for the starfish and sand dollar pieces. I think I ordered those on eBay years ago. The kids aren’t much on seashell hunting anymore, but I am.
We picked up the extra-large seashells on Kodiak Island several years ago on a trip to visit our daughter and her family.
