If you love decorating with flowers and your favorite salvaged finds, these upcycled wood boxes and containers might be right up your alley. I’m always on the lookout for old, unique pieces to repurpose, and wood pieces are especially fun to work with.
From cigar boxes and vintage chests to quirky flea market finds, these containers can be personalized to fit your decor. They’re a fun way to dress up a porch, patio, or tabletop. Some are perfect for real potted flowers, and others work beautifully with artificial stems. I’ve completed all these projects myself, and I hope you are inspired!
1. Wood Flower Box With Butterfly Transfer

Now that I’m over my fear of decor transfers, I can’t stop incorporating them into my projects. A friend at the antique shop gave me this set of Re-Design by Prima transfers. She is always giving me stuff to work with—so sweet. Before applying the transfers, I painted the wood box black and distressed the paint.
2. Large Wooden Chest Planter

I purchased the red chest or box at my favorite junk shop, cleaned it up, and applied a coat of dark wax to give the paint an aged look. I buy flowers from a local stand and just set the pots into the red chest. Since the wood isn’t protected from the elements, I set it under the carport or front porch.
3. Cigar Box Flower Planter for Artificial Flowers

I love old wood cigar boxes, the hard cardboard kind…not as much. You can do so many things with the wooden boxes. I think they look great, filled with flowers, or use them as jewelry boxes.
4. Vintage Cheese Box Flower Container Idea

It used to cost an arm and a leg to buy vintage cheese boxes, but not anymore. They are great to display on their own, or you could make a tiered flower display with a couple or three.
5. Bold Yellow DIY Stenciled Planter

I tried selling this box at my booth, but no one wanted it, so I spruced it up nicely. This is one of my favorite DIY projects. I love the sunny color and the stencil.
6. Upcycled Sewing Container Flower Planter

This was a drum-like table that held sewing supplies. I run across them occasionally at flea markets, and I finally found a use for them. The painted planter also serves to display my address numbers. How cute is that? The planter sits on our front porch.
7. Upcycled Magazine Rack Planter

I painted an old magazine rack and then lined it with burlap. For this photo, I used faux flowers, but it would look great with a potted plant. What do you think of the upcycled wheels? The perfect finishing touch.
8. Wood Cigar Box for Potted Flowers

Another cigar box but this time with a small potted plant inside. I painted the folding table and dry-brushed it with black paint. The folding table is a great piece for a small patio.
9. Upcycled Wood Birdhouse Planter

This perfectly chippy wood birdhouse is a find from my favorite junk shop. For my Fall porch, I made a rake wreath, collected several pots of mms and set this pot of flowers in the birdhouse.
10. Wood Potty Chair Flower Planter Idea

I don’t know if kids’ potty chairs are still a popular choice for potty training, do you? It has been a while since we had a young one around our house. Sofi is our youngest grandchild, and she is 14. Anyway, I painted the potty chair with my paint sprayer, then set the pot of flowers on it.
11. Stripped Multi-Purpose Flower Box or Treat Container

Don’t you just love stripes? I think they make an immediate impact and this box with wheels is perfect as a flower planter or to hold treats and bottled water for your home delivery guys and girls.
I hope these upcycled flower container ideas inspire you to look at old wooden pieces in a new way. Whether you paint them, distress them, stencil them, or leave them perfectly imperfect, they can add a whimsical touch to your home and outdoor spaces. If you have a favorite project from the bunch, I’d love to know which one catches your eye.
As always, thanks for being here, Kathy
