I don’t even have to see your closet to know you need to clean it out. I think that is a given in any home. My closet is stuffed full of things I don’t wear or need.
Clean out your closet this week with an eye for things you can repurpose. You may not even need to do any work on the pieces; just use them differently. Don’t donate your old items; recreate them….
1. Belts
Leather belts, cloth belts, and even baby boomer vintage chain link belts can be repurposed. Make handles for old wood boxes or new crates from the dollar store. Use chain belts to hang planters.
2. Boots
Rubber boots make great “vases.” Fill them with flowers and hang them from your fence. Fancy cowboy boots can be used as umbrella stands, and for another fun display, plant succulents in worn work boots.
3. Handbags
Small purses filled with personal products or large tote bags stuffed with bath towels are fun ways to organize things in bathrooms or guest rooms. Fill them with just about anything. Purses are also great repurposed items for door displays
4. Sweaters
Cover an outdated pillow with a sweater from your closet or the thrift store. Also, use them to decorate boring foam pumpkins for the holidays.
5. Scarves
You can do so many things with scarves. Wrap them around a grapevine wreath and change the scarf with the seasons, or wrap a scarf around a large flower pot. No hard work needed.
6. Buttons
Remove buttons from old, worn clothing or save the button packs attached to new items of clothing. Make Christmas ornaments, wall decor, or add them to gift bags or photo frames for a unique look. Get creative.
7. Jewelry
Use hot glue or glue made specifically for crafting and add a magnet to your favorite vintage jewelry piece. Wrap a necklace around old brown or blue bottles. You can do these things without damaging the jewelry.
8. Skirts
Show off your personal style in your home decor by repurposing an old skirt or dress. Pretty designs dress up chair seats and it is easy as pie to recover fabric seats. I’m not talking about upholstering something, just re-covering a seat, which requires only removing the screws in the chair seat and stapling the fabric in place.
9. Jeans
Well, isn’t this a unique idea for recycling old jeans? I cleaned out my closet and took the jeans that were too small or too big down to my workshop. I knew a project idea would come to me one day.
10. Hats
Often, it is not even necessary to remake your old items. Hang a hat on the wall as decor or use the hat in place of a lampshade. Add a bow or brooch for a fun touch.
11. Shirts
I’m a design freak when it comes to my clothing. I love unique designs and bold colors. When I clean out my closet, before I donate anything or toss things away I think of ways they can be repurposed.
The chair seat cover is a good example of repurposing and of my style. After shrinking over the years and me gaining weight, this colorful shirt didn’t fit properly. So now it is a seat cover!
12. Ties
Wine is a very popular hostess gift, and what better way to present it than in a creative gift bag, or a DIY Shirt and Tie Bag! Ties can also be used to make woven chair seats, wreaths, coffee cozy holders, and more.
13. Lace Clothing
Lacy clothing or even a pair of lace tights can be used in various projects. Create a lace bracelet and add a brooch to the bracelet. Cut the garment into strips and make a rag garland.
14. Linens
Old sheets, curtains, or shower curtains make great chair seat covers and throw pillows. Create a rag garland using a variety of textured fabrics and designs. Mod Podge the fabric to flower pots or furniture. Stretch pretty curtains over canvas boards to make wall art. You get the idea.
15. Quilts
Create one-of-a-kind tree ornaments or a garland using cutter quilts. Add a cut-out design to wall decor or make wood block pumpkins covered with beautiful vintage quilt pieces.
