The grey has a great sheen….almost like a pearl finish. I’ve used Beyond Paint for years and I can’t even tell you how many projects I’ve completed with the paint. A bunch for sure. This is the first time I’ve used the Soft Grey.

I painted 2 side chairs and 1 arm chair grey and covered the seats with drop cloths.

junk shop chairs ready for makeover

These are the 3 chairs from my favorite junk shop. The price for all three was $35. Prices for used furniture just keeps going up. I have a thing for arm chairs and I couldn’t pass this one up.

one coat of paint

This is how the chair looked after one coat of paint. The Beyond Paint is a primer, paint, and sealer all in one. No extra steps…..just paint. I applied two coats of paint to the chairs.

Drop Cloth

I’m going neutral with the chairs because when I asked the question on Facebook about the drop cloth or bold fabric I got a lot of feedback with keeping the look neutral. So drop cloth for the seat cover it is.

I bought the new drop cloths at Harbor Freight. They were on sale for $8.99 each so I bought two. When I opened the package the chemical odor nearly knocked me over. I washed and dried the drop cloths before using them. No more odor.

recovering a chair seat

The armchair seat cover was worn through on the front and the padding was almost non existent in that area. I added extra padding over the whole seat. You guys have seen me cover chair seats a ton of times. If you need a refresher see this post…How To Recover A Fabric Chair Seat.

A couple of the chairs were missing screws to attach the seat bottoms to the chair frame. Sometimes the most time consuming part of my makeovers is finding screws and hardware to wrap up the project.

Thought you might enjoy seeing me in my element. The weather was really cold the day I painted the chairs. I like to open the garage door to the workshop and paint in natural light. Wasn’t happening that day. I painted the chairs in the middle of the workshop. The photo above shows me in my paint clothes checking out my work. Always stylin’.

I absolutely love these chairs. Patting myself on the back and doing the happy dance. Drop cloths make great seat covers. Very inexpensive and they wear well.

One more look at the three chairs before I take them to the shop. Too bad I didn’t have a complete set of these chairs.

What do you think of the color? The fabric choice for the seats? I would love to hear your opinions and also if you have another suggestion for seat cover fabric.

Tomorrow I have the coolest ever Thrift Store Décor Project. Hope you stop by. Thanks for being here and have a great day, Kathy

  1. That is a lovely shade of grey! Thank you for posting the info on where to buy it. I have not used that brand before, but your recommendation is all I need to try the paint. The chairs are beautiful!

  2. I love the Soft Gray. I’ve spent many years looking for the perfect gray – no blue, green or purple undertones – and when I finally found it, it was discontinued. You may have just pointed me in the right direction!
I’m glad you got to try a Zibra Paintbrush. I discovered them 2 years ago and have never turned back. i own every type of detail brush they make and the 2″ Wedge brush which is fantastic for covering large areas. They hold a large amount of paint and release it beautifully and have the softest bristles ever with just the right amount of sproinginess (my made up word). They lay down such a smooth, brush stroke free finish too. The Fan Brush is excellent for applying top coats too. It also reaches in and around all those crevices some furniture has -like faux bamboo. Anyway, I hope you love them as much as I do! Your chairs are beautiful. You picked the perfect color and I love drop cloth seat covers!

  3. Grey is one of my favs. Where can I buy the paint, Beyond? I luv chairs, too. Luv ur tutorials.

  4. Love the chairs – go with about anything. Only thing I can think of on the chair covers would be some soft stenciling in the grey color just to give it a little pop but they are great the way they are.

  5. Great job. That’s a beautiful grey, and I like the chair cover, too. I’ll have to try that paint sometime.

  6. Love the soft gray color. I redid a chair by painting over the wood part of the chair with a dark glaze. Then instead of removing the old fabric, I painted over it with my linen color chalk paint from Rethunk Junk. It made the fabric feel almost like canvas. I love the feel of it.

  7. You always have the best makeovers! I have 2 armchairs I want to paint and recover. You have inspired me to complete the makeover.
